Arm Drag to Darce Choke

Yesterday we looked at an Arm Drag into a Guillotine Choke. Today I thought it would be nice to focus on my favorite choke….The Darce. I first saw this technique on Jeff Glover’s Deep Half Guard Dvd and immediately wanted to try it. What I really like about this set up is that it uses your opponent’s movements against him! One minute they think they are getting free and passing your guard and the next minute their tapping out to the Darce Choke!

In the video below the guys from Train Fight Win.com show their variation of the Butterfly to Darce. I really like how they talk about not just jumping into the choke. One of the downfalls of the Darce Choke is that it has become super popular and many people can see it coming from a mile away. By placing your top arm across his head and grabbing it with the arm under his head you get to set up the choke at your speed and not your opponent’s. I would liken this position to being the same as the vice grip. Even though this is not a vice grip, it is super important to drive your opponent’s head down and make it uncomfortable for them. If they can free their head they can escape your choke.

Speaking of Deep Half Guard and Arm Drags, Coach Alder is showing all of the students in his Advanced Jiu Jitsu class at 10th Planet Van Nuys all of his Deep Half secrets this month! Stop by and learn some killer techniques, have fun, and sweat a little!
