Ahhh the Arm Drag. While it is a staple of Lucha Libre, it also can be used in Jiu Jitsu. One of the awesome aspects of the Arm Drag is that it can be used from several different positions. Standing, closed guard, someone passing your guard, or butterfly guard…..It doesn’t matter. You can find and an Arm Drag.
This month at 10th Planet Van Nuys we are going to be covering the Arm Drag from open guard. The Arm Drag from open guard is one of my more high percentage Arm Drags. I really like how playing the open guard allows me to freely move my lower body and use my whole body to complete the drag.
In the video below Ken Primola of Ilovebjj.com shows his variation of the Arm Drag from your opponent passing your guard. With this variation it is super important to remember your knee placement. If you leave you knee in front of your opponent, it will be impossible to complete the Arm Drag. You have to clear this knee. Clearing this knee also will give you the momentum that you need to complete this sit up. Trying to pick your body up from this postion to take the back can be extremely difficult without the momentum created from the leg kicking out.
Arm Drag Palooza is happening this month at 10th Planet Van Nuys. Make sure to stop by and get some reps in. The Arm Drag is a great move that can be a game changer for some!
