Dean Lister – Arm Behind the Back Guard Pass

This month we are working on our guard passing over at 10th Planet Van Nuys. One of my favorite guard passes when I first started Jiu Jitsu was the arm behind the back pass. I loved using this pass because I was able to lock up my opponent’s arm and take it out of the game and not allowing him to get his frames on my hips. At the time I had no clue why this pass worked I only knew that it worked! The more I progress though in my jiu jitsu game the more I am noticing the importance of really controlling my opponent while I pass his guard. One of the key details that I found with this pass is that you can not get lazy with it. Once you lock up the arm you have to keep heavy on top of your opponent. If you give them even an inch of space they will find a way to exploit it.
