Without fail every time that I talk with someone who practices BJJ and let them know that I am a member of 10th Planet Van Nuys the next question usually is “So you use rubber guard?”. No….I don’t use rubber guard. I’ll admit that early on in my Jiu Jitsu journey that I used Rubber Guard a lot. In fact rubber guard used to be one of my go to positions. Over the years I have stopped using it.
One of the biggest misconceptions about 10th Planet and 10th Planet Van Nuys is that all we do is flashy moves. I disagree. We focus more on our fundamentals than we do the flashy moves. For example lets look at our past few months of curriculum. In the past 6 months we have covered The Twister (a flash move), guard passing, half guard passing, chokes from the sprawl, Deep Half Sweeps, back takes, RNCs, Side Chokes, and North South chokes. So in half a year we only really studied one quote on quote flashy move. In our fundamentals class the only “flashy” move that we cover is the lockdown, old school, and dog fight. Now lets look at some of our recent competition submission victories. Off the top of my head I counted two Americanas, three rear naked chokes, and one head and arm choke. Again not a lot of flashy moves. More fundamental moves.
At 10th Planet Van Nuys we stick to the basics. You can’t master the advanced “flashy” moves without first knowing the fundamentals. If you want to learn some of these moves make sure to check out 10th Planet Van Nuys.com for more info on a free class!
