We have all done it. We see this new and awesome looking jiu jitsu dvd set online and rush to order it. We sit anxiously by the door waiting for days hoping that today will be the day that our mail man has a special package waiting for us. Finally the magical day comes! You take the dvd out of the box and pop it into your dvd player….Now what?
There is no one way to learn. Being a middle school teacher I can attest to the fact that everyone learns differently. For some of us we will need to watch the dvd over and over again. For some of us we can watch it over and over again and not really understand the moves until we step onto the mat and drill them ourselves. For others they may never “get it” because they are not gearing the learning to their own unique learning style. Before trying to use a dvd to enhance your jiu jitsu, it’s important to identify what type of learner you are so you know the best way to absorb the materials.
It’s also important to remember that you are not going to master the moves the first time that you watch the dvd. I highly doubt that the instrutor on the dvd mastered any of the stuff that they are showing the first time they tried it. It’s important to remember that this will be an ongoing process much like learning algebra or a foreign language. Yes you may pick up certain aspects of the moves quickly, but mastery will require lots of practice. Tomorrow I’m going to share with you how I personally learn from DVDs.
