In the past, I have written about my yearly goals. After reading a bit about the importance of focus and finishing your goals I decided this year to instead share my focus areas for 2019. Below are the three areas that I want to focus on during my jiu jitsu study time, rolling, and general time around the gym.
#1 Half Guard
The past few years I have spent a lot of time focusing on my top game. This year I want to really get a good grasp of the half guard. I would really like to finally figure out deep half in particular. I find myself getting into the position a lot but since I am not focusing on it I freeze and do not know what to do from the position. My training partner Tim Coon (dodgycollective.com) and I both agreed that we would focus on half guard and continue to make it strong parts of our game this year.
#2 Tape Study
I go through spurts of tape study. Sometimes I get really into something and watch it non stop. Then I’ll go weeks without watching anything. A focus for me is to spend more time watching instructionals and rolling footage. My hope is that this constant exposure to jiu jitsu will help me start to become aware of things I previously had not noticed.
#3 Blog More
The past few years have been a whirlwind for me. Between work and family, I have not had much time to blog. My focus this year is to push out at least 1 post per month. Sometimes it may be a cool technique that I saw while sometimes I will share something that is on my mind in regards to jiu jitsu.
There they are. My three focus points for the year. If you have not created your own focus points for the year it’s not too late! Take a few minutes and think about what you really want to get out of your training. When we train with a focus we get better. I hope everyone’s 2019 is a year of great growth in jiu jitsu!
